Lawyers on the take

Shady lawyers are at it again, demanding debt payments that have prescribed. Several aggrieved recipients of letters of demand have voiced their outrage on internet complaints sites, but one such reader turned to Noseweek. He received a demand with a difference, framed as a special offer.

But it was an offer our reader most certainly would refuse, responding: "Please stop pestering me with this rubbish."

Banks also have a tendency to assume they can act on behalf of people without their consent. When they get caught out, they then resort to handing their mistakes over for collection, I have an incident running with Nedbank Card Division at the moment which could well end up on these pages.

VVM has recently sent me an e-mail FINAL DEMAND for SABC licence fees. I have never received any other demands.

I have not lived in SA for the past three years. I have no assets in SA as such, and I am in the process of obtaining citizenship for another country. Good luck in getting money out of me VVM

VVM is still at it. I was harrassed for several months by one "Govender" for non-existant debt. Attempts to get back to the numbers used in calls and SMS's were unsuccesful, leading me to beleive they were made from stolen 'phones. Vodacom advised that "Govender" had registered himself using my identity number. Vodacom stopped the process.
